19 Jan 10 Sport Teams With Glamour in Indian Premier League Cricket

The empire strikes back! And has it done with full force? Any one updated on the scenario of cricket in India will surely know the over-hyped situation of cricket and the currently popular Indian Premier League cricket. With the economic clout that is present with the big names concerned with this novelty in cricket, this sport has certainly become the point of focus of cricketers worldwide.

The investment of mammoth amounts of money into this venture has certainly put all focus of the media into this sport. Already, as it is said world over that cricket is not a sport but an obsession in India. When this obsession has joined hands with the rich and famous and those in show business, there can be nothing bigger and better.

With the Indian Premier League cricket matches starting in April 2008, things have proceeded from the inception stage and auctions are being held. Millions are being invested in the cricket players who are on board this venture. The largest real estate developer in India, DLF has paid US$50 million for the rights to the title of the IPL for the next five years. Players from many countries have been roped in with the support of the International Cricket Council.

However, with so much money going in to IPL cricket, sportsmen associated with other sports have showed great concern. This is because this whole venture will have an effect on the sponsorships for other games and especially with the Beijing Olympic Games just around the corner.

In spite of all the speculations related to this newly formed league in India, the misconceptions of those countries which considered India as some poor Third World state have been crushed. Its time they are made familiar with the Indian passion for excellence, sheer luxury and pure style!

19 Jan 10 English Cricket – England Stars Given the Nod to Join Ipl

I haven’t really been able to watch cricket played live but judging by the scenes relayed by the telly of English cricket matches, it always conveys a party atmosphere, of people really enjoying the experience of watching a match live. The recent turmoil that the English Cricket team underwent almost divided the team and shattered the hearts of avid English cricket supporters.

I guess the decision of the English and Wales Cricket Board to grant England’s top cricketers to join the Indian Premier League and be out of English soil for three weeks is good for the lads. Just as a footballer always like to play football especially if he earns a living by playing, so do the cricketers. They haven’t really been able to concentrate that much in playing cricket with the internal problems and with the prospect of facing the world’s best players at the IPL in a twenty20 match, it can prove to be a valuable experience. England recently lost 4-0 in their one-day series against the Indian national team last November.

The IPL or the Indian Premier League is a twenty20 cricket competition started last year and was formed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India with Lalit Modi as its Chairman and IPL Commissioner. He is also the BCCI Vice President. Under his stewardship the IPL has turned into a very lucrative league and a huge success that the Professional Cricketers Association has asked the ECB to seek a compromise solution  to enable the English national players the chance to play in the league. Because of the ECB’s refusal to release the players for the league last year due to a conflict in schedule as the IPL inaugural season coincided with the County Championship season last year and New Zealand’s tour of England.

With the go ahead signal given, Indian supporters of the IPL will now have the chance to watch their favorite English players in action. Topping that list are former English Cricket team skipper Kevin Pietersen and all-rounder Andrew Flintoff. Most members of the English national team have been offered contracts and are already included in the pool of players to be auctioned to the teams on February 6. Aside from Pietersen and Flintoff those who are centrally contracted to play for England are James Anderson, Ian Bell, Stuart Broad, Paul Collingwood, Alastair Cook, Stephen Harmison, Monty Panesar, Ryan Sidebottom, Andrew Strauss and Michael Vaughan.

At least six of these men might join the IPL. They were given permission to leave for a period of three weeks. The IPL season starts on the 10th of April, seven days after England completes its series against the West Indies. A return match also against the same opponent shall be played at Lords on the 6th of May making the nationals in the IPL will be back just five days before the start. It may be a tight window, but the PCA could not prevent these people the opportunity to earn lucrative deals while playing the sport they all love. And I do agree with that.

19 Jan 10 IPL – The Indian Official T20 Cricket League

The Indian Premier League (also known as the “DLF Indian Premier League” and often abbreviated as IPL), is a Twenty20 cricket competition created by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and chaired by the Chairman and Commisoner IPL, BCCI Vice President Lalit Modi. The first season of the Indian Premier League commenced on 18 April 2008, and ended on 1 June 2008 with the victory of the Rajasthan Royals in the final at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai. The 2nd League winner was Deccan Charges for the year 2009.

The IPL will bring the BCCI income of US$1 billion, over a period of five to ten years, reinforcing its status as the richest board in world cricket. All of these revenues are directed to a central pool, 40% of which will go to IPL itself, 54% to franchisees and 6% as prize money. The money will be distributed in these proportions until 2017, after which the share of IPL will be 50%, franchisees 45% and prize money 5%.

Official rules of IPL
There are five ways that a franchise can acquire a player. In the annual auction, buying domestic players, signing uncapped players through trading and buying replacements.[23][24] In the trading window the player can only be traded with his consent. The franchise will have to pay the difference between the old contract price and the new contract price. If the new contract is worth more than the older one then the difference will be shared between the player and the franchise selling the player.[25]

Some of the Team composition rules are:

* Minimum squad strength of 16 players plus one physio and a coach.
* No more than 8 foreign players in the squad and at most 4 in the playing XI.For the 2009 edition franchises are allowed 10 foreign players in the squad. The number allowed in the playing XI remains unchanged at 4.
* A minimum of 8 local players must be included in each team.
* A minimum of 2 players from the BCCI under-22 pool in each team.

19 Jan 10 IPL T20: cricket, glamour and much more

T20 has given a new meaning to cricket. Cricket started with test matches and went till one day and now, its brand new format is twenty20. With the victory in Twenty20 World Cup Cricket Tournament in South Africa, this format has become India’s beloved game. After seeing so much praise, BCCI has tried and given it a new dimension in India with IPL T20.

Indian premiere league proved itself last year. In order to start this idea BBCI has taken the support from cricket boards of various countries, so that they allow their players to play in the IPL Cricket League. They are being paid heavy sums for doing so.

Auctions of the players and the state teams have attracted many big business houses, bollywood stars and millionaires from all around the world. These big names that are paying certainly do make a difference in the game.

In India, people consider cricket as a religion than just a sport. This passion for the game has written the success story of this format and league. This league has not given only cricket but lots of entertainment also through Bollywood stars, cheerleaders, music, etc.

In this league there are eight teams representing various regions of India and these teams are combined with international cricket stars and domestic players. They play matches in the twenty20 format against each other. Every team will be playing two matches against another team and the four highest winners will be playing two semifinals. The semifinal winners will then play the finale of the game. This gives the lot of action to the cricket lovers all around the world.

IPL T20 is a league which gives a chance to the domestic players to improve their game and learn from their seniors. In this, every team has to play only 20overs. This is shortest form of cricket which has given tallest of height to cricket.

19 Jan 10 Ipl Cricket League: a New Milestone in the Field of Cricket

By its acquisition of most players in the world of cricket, the Indian Premier League has managed to move everything in its way like a thunder rumbling across. The attention that the IPL Cricket league is receiving has belittled the meagre reputation that the ICL managed to secure some time back and IPL has already done what it was conceived for.

The formation of the IPL cricket league is certainly not the result or aftermath of the Indian win over the Twenty20 World Cup which was initially termed as “a waste of time” by high officials in BCCI. It is due to the formation of the Indian Cricket League by some former Indian cricket players who wanted to move the monopoly of BCCI over Indian cricket that the concept of the IPL came around.

Taking inspiration from English Premier League, BCCI started the idea of Indian Premier League where the support of cricket boards of various countries has been sought. players from different countries have been allowed to play in the IPL cricket League and they are being paid heavy sums for doing so.

Amounts so large are involved in both these ventures that using the word “enormous” will be underestimating them. Auctions of the players and the state teams in the IPL have attracted big business houses, Bollywood actors, millionaires from all over the world. It is the big names that are paying that have made all the difference in the IPL.

Cricket is considered to be more like a religion in India than just a sport. People have their passion with this game and passion is one virtue where everything else takes a backseat. With matches in this league to start in April 2008, everybody has their fingers crossed and is hoping for the great entertainment.

14 Jan 10 Australia Crushes India In the First Cricket Test Match

The biggest day in the Australian cricket calendar saw Australia play India in the famous Boxing Day cricket test at the MCG in Australia. With over 80,000 spectators at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and nearly 200 million cricket fans in India watching the test match this was one of the most watched cricket games of the year.

The Australian cricket crowd is renowned for being very vocal and at times rowdy. However, there is no greater stage for playing cricket than at the MCG on Boxing Day in Melbourne.

As for the cricket match, Australia went into the match with a dilemma as to its bowling line-up. The aussies were unsure as to go with all fast bowlers or to include a spinner in the team. With the retirement of the greatest spin bowler last year in Shane Warne; the Australian team has struggled to replace him. However, Brad Hogg, has stepped up into some form at the right time and as a result was included in the team for his fifth test match.

On day one, Australia went into bat first with Matthew Hayden and Phil Jaques. Both established a fantastic opening partnership before Jaques went out. Hayden went on to score 124 runs on a tough wicket. The Australian middle order collapsed with Ricky Ponting and Hussey going cheaply before the tail wagged for the aussies. Indian bowler Kumble bowled extremely well for India taking five wickets.

On day two, India struggled with the bat and with some very slow batting averaged only two runs per over early on. Sachin Tendulkar, The Master, played a fine innings before going out trying to cut the ball. The remaining Indian batters fell quite easily leaving Australia with a solid first innings lead.

On day three, Australia set out to increase the lead with another good opening stance by the aussie openers. Ricky Ponting fell early on again which was a major success for the Indians before Michael Clarke played a good knock leaving Australia with a lead of 499 runs for the Indians to chase. One of the major issues on day three was the high number of no balls especially at Umpire Billy Bowden’s end.

On day four, it was all about the Australian bowling with the aussies taking some early wickets and thus removing any chance of an Indian win. Brad Hogg and Mitchell Johnson got some valuable wickets for the aussies and both gave themselves a good chance of being selected for the next cricket match at the SCG.

The win for the Australian cricket team results in fifteen successive test wins and they need only one more to tie Steve Waugh’s record. Adam Gilchrist also broke Ian Healy’s wicket keeping record and is now only one away from the magical 400 which he will most likely get in Sydney.

Matthew Hayden was named man of the match after two great batting innings. The Australians once again lead with some great fielding and always kept the pressure on the Indians. The Indians on the other hand let themselves down in the field.

The Indians will need to regroup after this crushing loss. With such a strong batting line-up the Indians couldn’t even reach 200 runs in either innings. It will be interesting to see if the Indian cricket team make any changes especially with the batting line up. The only concern for the Australians will once again be with the bowlers. Will Mitchell Johnson and Brad Hogg stay in the team or will Shaun Tait be awarded his opportunity to bring some heat to the bowling line-up.

14 Jan 10 The Cricket Insider News

SHIVNARINE WINS COVETED TITLE

He totally deserves it. Shivnarine Chanderpaul has been crowned as ICC Player of the Year, namely for his patience, but mostly for the inspiration and hope, he provides for Caribbean cricket and her supporters.Quite how Dale Steyn beat him to the test awards elude me.

Steyn is Test Player of the Year

In 2008, Chanders has batted 13 times in Tests, against South Africa, Sri Lanka and Australia, the three strongest attacks in the game, remaining unbeatable on six occasions, each of which he tallied at least 65. He passed 50 eight times, and averages 101. In South Africa his series average was 82.33. Against the Aussies he averages 147, scoring one fewer 50 plus.

Ponting ends his drought and improves his average

After the first-over dismissal of Matthew Hayden for a duck, Ricky Ponting and Simon Katich foughtback on day one of the first Test. Ponting ended his drought on Indian soil with a superb 123 to steer the tourists to a comfortable 254 – 4 by stump on the opening day at the Chinnaswammy stadium..

Ponting elected to take the strike first after winning the toss, put on 166 for the second wicket with Simon Katich. Left handed Katich scored 66. Ponting added 60 for the third wicket with Michael Hussey (46 not out) before he was trapped lbw by Harbhajan Singh. It was the ninth time the Australian Captain has fallen to the off-spinner.

Ponting set aside a disappointing average of 12.28 in eight previous Tests in India to compile his 36th career Test century, just three behind record holder Sachin Tendulkar.

There was no time that Ponting looked more like the batsman who has dominated attacks everywhere in the world but India than when he brought up his half century with a classic cover drive.

Ponting celebrated his first century in India while completing his third run before raising his bat in triumph. Not only had he kept his vow of improving his average in India, but he had also broken a record. The century was Ponting’s16 as Captain, he was previously tied with Steve Waugh and Allan Border on 15.

14 Jan 10 future of pakistan cricket

LAHORE, Pakistan (AFP) — Former Pakistan cricket greats condemned Tuesday’s brazen attack on the Sri Lankan team, fearing the country will lose the chance to host the 2011 World Cup.

Eight people were killed and seven Sri Lankan cricketers and a coach wounded when up to 12 gunmen attacked the squad’s convoy near the Gaddafi stadium in Lahore with rockets, hand grenades and automatic weapons, police said.

The assault happened as the team was heading for the third day’s play in the second Test against Pakistan.

“It is a major, major shock. Teams were already unwilling to come to Pakistan. This will end the game for the next couple of years, including the hosting rights of the World Cup,” former captain Wasim Akram told AFP.

Pakistan is the co-host of the World Cup along with India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Wasim’s pace partner Waqar Younis, who was commentating on the second Test, also feared for the future of cricket in Pakistan.

“It is a big tragedy. Something like this should never have happened. We talk about foreign teams being provided top security but after what happened today I don’t see any team coming to Pakistan for a while,” he said.

“Even the International Cricket Council (ICC) will now find it hard to allow the World Cup matches to be held in Pakistan. It is gone,” Waqar added.

Another former captain, Javed Miandad, said Pakistan cricket had been badly hurt. “It is all gone,” he said.

“It is going to be very difficult for us to now convince teams that they can play the World Cup in Pakistan safely,” said Miandad, who resigned recently as director general of the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Former spinner Iqbal Qasim said the incidents had shaken the cricket-loving nation.

“What to say of cricket? These events have hit the most vibrant city in Pakistan. For the time being we feel everything has come to a dead end. There will be no cricket at home and we have to play our cricket at neutral venues.”

Former paceman Shahid Afridi and ex-captain Moin Khan strongly condemned the incident while on tour in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, where they were visiting a hospital in an area destroyed by a massive earthquake in 2005.

“The future of cricket is in danger in Pakistan. Our country has been surrounded by enemies from all directions,” Afridi told reporters.

“The nation should unite to face these challenges.”

“I strongly condemn this incident and regret the loss of life and injuries to police and players. This should not have happened,” said Khan.

New Zealand previously cut short a tour when a suicide bomb blast outside their team hotel in Karachi killed 19 people in May 2002.
