19 Jan 10 The Latest UID Registry Submission Process

UID labeling or marking is a must for all government furnished items before they are submitted to the UID registry. The Department of Defense (DoD) implemented this UID registry from November 2004 and it plans to complete the unique identification naming process for all the tangible items by December 31, 2010. Through the unique identification label can be identified uniquely and hence it will be easier for the (DoD) to keep track of all items starting from acquisition, repair to maintenance. The UID labels are a part of DoD’s serialization tracking programs (SNTs). UID registry is basically a software system to keep track of different tangible items in accordance to the UID standards.

UID Registry submission process

For a successful submission to the UID registry, accuracy of data is crucial. Besides the issuing agency code (IAC), construct type info such as construct #1 or construct #2 should be mentioned. Another important info, concatenated human readable UID should also be present. The concatenated human readable UID is extracted from the 2D-matrix bar code by scanning to decoding software.

There are several methods to submit data to the UID registry. Reformatting the data in an XML transmission way is a frequently used method. There are several steps in this mode of submission process which are discussed in detail as follows.

UID Registry schema Review
Currently 3.0 is the most up-to-date version of the UID Registry schema available. It is very important to check if the external file from your property management database matches with that of UID Registry requirements, before you plan to convert the file to XML format. Also, the latest version has many changes in support of GFP.

Adjustment in the Data format
Usually certain changes are required to make the data format in accordance with the UID registry. It might be a bit time consuming since you need to match the entire format with the UID Registry maintenance team. Another important thing, depending upon your product, you need to export the data to the specific manipulation file.

Submit directly to UID Test Registry
After your data is formatted into a transferable XML document, it needs to be submitted at the test registry before making it to the UID Registry. Once it is approved by the UID Production Registry, you can send the file to a GEX certified VAN provider who ensures the file reaches the UID Registry FTP servers.

A lot is going on in recent times on the issue of competency mapping. A lot of resource is spent and consultants are invited to do competency mapping. Competency mapping is gaining much more importance and organizations are aware of having good human resources or putting the right people on right job.

Competency mapping is important and is an essential exercise. Every well managed firm should have well defined roles and list of competencies required to perform each role effectively. Such list should be used for recruitment, performance management, promotions, placements and training needs identification.

In performing or carrying out work, it is essential that the required job skills first be articulated. This information not only helps to identify individuals who have the matching skills for doing the work but also the skills that will enhance the successful performance of the work. Consolidate the list and present it to a role set group or a special task force constituted for that role. Appoint a task force for each role.

For e.g. Sales Executive, Assistant HR Manager, Receptionist, PR Manager etc. are known to all and easy to profile. Work out competencies for this role if necessary with the help of job analysis specialist or an internal member who has knowledge of competency mapping.

ADC & AC are used to identify Competencies?

Assessment Centers are centers set up by an organization for periodic or continuous assessment of competencies required to perform current, future likely or higher level jobs/roles/tasks. They are increasingly used to identify high fliers and develop leaders/ competencies for the future. They are also being used for recruitment purposes to assess the suitability of the candidate for entry level as well as for senior levels positions. Assessment Centers use multiple methods like in-basket presentations, role plays, simulation exercise, leadership group discussions, case studies etc. They are also called as development centers or ADCs in the recent.

Role of Competency in Recruitment & Retention

Competency mapping can play a significant role in recruitment and retaining people as it gives a more accurate analysis of the job requirements, the candidate’s capability, of the difference between the two, and the development and training needs to bridge the gaps.

The issue is much more complex than it appears, and most HR departments have been struggling to formulate the right framework for their organisation.

Unless managements and HR heads have holistic expectations from their HR departments, the competency movement is unlikely to succeed as it requires lot of time, dedication and money. Before an organisation embarks on this journey it has to be very clear about the business goals, capability-building imperatives and core competencies of the organisation. The competency mapping process needs to be strongly integrated with these aspects.

Experts agree that the competency mapping process does not fit the one-size-fits all formula. It has to be specific to the user organisation. “My suggestion is to develop models that draw from but are not defined by existing research, using behavioural interview methods so that the organisation creates a model that reflects its own strategy, its own market, its own customers, and the competencies that bring success in that specific context (including national culture). Start with small, discrete groups or teams, ideally in two directions-a ‘horizontal slice’ across the business that takes in a multi-functional or multi-site group, more or less at the same organisational level, and a ‘vertical slice’ taking in one whole department or team from top to bottom. From that, the organisation can learn about the process of competency modelling, and how potential alternative formats for the models may or may not fit the needs of the business

It is important to focus on one or two key areas of implementation rather than the whole HRD agenda in one scoop. Competency mapping can be rather good at providing organisational pain relief when applied effectively-and so making the case for extending it. Further, it is advisable to begin with a ‘horizontal’ slice of the management or senior-most team as the benefits will percolate down to the whole organisation.

CONCLUSION

Competency is a set of knowledge, skills and attitudes required to perform a job effectively and efficiently. A Competency is something that describes how a job might be done, excellently; a Competence only describes what has to be done, not how. So the Competences might describe the duties of a Sales Manager for example, such as manage the sales office and its staff, prepare quotations and sales order processing, manage Key Accounts and supervise and motivate the field sales force. The Competencies which might determine excellence in this role could include Problem Solving and Judgment; Drive and Determination; Commercial Awareness; Inter-personal skills etc, all of which might be described further by Behavioral Indicators relating specifically to that post in that organization.

Some other helpful editing tools commonly found in word processors include an automatic spelling checker, a thesaurus, and a grammar checker.

Formatting enables users to define the appearance of the elements in a document, such as the font and type size of all headings and text, the left, right, top, and bottom margins of each page, and the space before and after sentences and paragraphs. Most word processors allow all the elements in a document to be formatted at once. This is accomplished by applying a “style.”

Word processors are approaching the formatting power of full-featured desktop publishing applications. The formatted page can be viewed on the computer screen exactly as it will be printed.

The latest word processors have many features that allow group of people to work together on the same document. For instance, multiple versions of a document can be saved to a single file for version control. Access levels can be assigned so that only a select group of people can make changes to a document. Edits can be marked with the date, time, and editor’s name; and text colors can be assigned to differentiate editors. In addition, some word processors have editing features that include highlighting text, drawing lines through text to represent deleted text, and using red underscoring to identify changed text.

The shoot of the film with the supporting characters began on 28 July 2008. Hirani and his team left in late August for the shoot with the principal cast. The film was shot in Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Ladakh and Shimla. Aamir and rest of the cast began shooting in early September. Hirani planned to wrap up the film by December.[7] The first scene was shot in an aircraft with Madhavan. From Mumbai, the crew and cast comprising Aamir and Kareena went to Ladakh for a 20-day schedule.[8] The shooting also took place at the Indian Institute of Management – Bangalore for 33 days as a part of the second schedule of production.[9] There was also a wedding scene filmed between Kareena and Sharman.[10]
