19 Jan 10 Fulham in Premier League 2009-10

Fulham Football Club is an English professional football club based in Fulham, in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Founded in 1879, they celebrated their 125th anniversary in 2004, and are in the top tier of English football, the Premier League. Fulham are the oldest professional football team in London, usually considered to have been founded in 1879 (though the semi-professional Cray Wanderers F.C. are the oldest team in London still in existence).

The club spent much time in the old First Division through the 1960s but never gained any major honours. In 1975, as a Second Division team, they contested the FA Cup final for the only time in their history, losing 2–0 to West Ham United, the Fulham side that day containing former Hammers great Bobby Moore. Fulham qualified for the UEFA Cup in 2002 by winning the Intertoto Cup, beating Bologna 5–3 in the final over two legs. In the UEFA Cup, they won through two rounds before being defeated by Hertha Berlin. In the mid-1990s they had a brief spell in the former Fourth Division, but within less than a decade, they advanced into the top flight. No doubt their new millionaire chairman, Mohamed Al-Fayed played a crucial role. In 2009, Fulham had their highest-ever finish in the top-flight, coming 7th to qualify for Europe once again.

The club has produced many British greats including Johnny Haynes, George Cohen, Bobby Robson, Rodney Marsh and Alan Mullery. They play at the historic Craven Cottage, their home since 1896, a riverside ground on the banks of the River Thames in Fulham, having spent two years at Loftus Road while Craven Cottage was undergoing renovations to bring it up to Premier League standards. The club’s training ground is located near Motspur Park (and was where Chariots of Fire among others was filmed), where Fulham’s Academy is also situated, including a mini-stadium where the reserves play. Fulham currently have a partnership agreement with the Boston Red Sox baseball team.

After Fulham’s relegation escape, Hodgson spoke of the need to ensure Fulham never found themselves in such a precarious position again. He struck early during the summer transfer window to claim the signing of experienced, Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer on a free from Middlesbrough on 22 May 2008. On 28 May 2008, the club announced that captain and club legend Brian McBride would not renew his contract and would be returning to USA to play for the Chicago Fire. On 12 June Fulham added the signing of Andranik Teymourian to its summer acquisitions. The 25-year-old Armenian-Iranian defensive midfielder has played most recently for Bolton and the Iran national football team. Zoltan Gera was also added to the squad earlier in the same month, after turning down a new contract with newly promoted West Bromwich Albion. In early July, Toni Kallio, whom Hodgson had signed on loan in January, signed a full contract with the club. On 15 July, Fulham announced the joint signing of Bobby Zamora and John Pantsil from London rivals West Ham. Next followed the saga of Andrew Johnson in which it was reported in the press on 29 June that Johnson (from Premier League rivals Everton) would be joining immediately for up to 12 million pounds. The transfer eventually happened more than a week later and at fees rising to almost 13 million, he is the second most expensive signing in Fulham’s history, (after Steve Marlet), and was looking to make an impact along with the other 9 player Roy Hodgson signed in the 2008–09 season. The current captain is Danny Murphy.

Fulham’s start to the season was not fantastic: a 2-1 defeat away to Hull City. However, two home games in quick succession saw them record a surprise 1-0 victory over Arsenal, as well as a 2-1 win against Bolton Wanderers. They also beat Leicester City in the Carling Cup, but it was a nervy affair for Fulham, who won 3-2 after being 2-1 down with 7 minutes to go: Danny Murphy scored the winner in stoppage time. Four successive defeats, three of which were in the League to Blackburn Rovers, West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion saw Fulham slide down the table: the other defeat, away to Burnley, saw them go out of the Carling Cup. Two draws against Sunderland and Portsmouth helped to stop the rot, and a 2-0 home win against Wigan Athletic was crucial. Fulham then somehow contrived to lose away to Everton, but they rectified this by defeating both Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur at Craven Cottage. The win against Spurs was particularly noteworthy, as Roy Hodgson’s side became the first to beat Tottenham under their new manager Harry Redknapp. Two 0-0 draws away to Liverpool and Aston Villa saw them rise to 10th in the table, and they have already picked up over half their points tally of last season. Their 1-1 draw at home with Manchester City, followed by their 0-0 draw away at Stoke City mean that they are now unbeaten in six matches. Following the Stoke match, Fulham had a very comfortable 3-0 win against Boro. Despite not winning either of their next two fixtures, the Christmas period was a satisfactory one for Fulham: on Boxing Day they drew 0-0 away to Tottenham (the year before they had lost 5-1 in the same fixture on the same day), and two days later they snatched a dramatic draw at home to their local rivals Chelsea, with both goals coming from American Clint Dempsey. This saw them cement their place in mid-table, where they still remain at 9th position in the third week of March 2009, a month in which they have had mixed results, losing 1-2 to lowly ranked Blackburn Rovers and 0-1 to Hull City, but sensationally prevailing 2-0 on 21 March 2009 at Craven Cottage against Premier League defending champions and 2008-09 leaders Manchester United, who had two players, Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney sent off. The goals for Fulham were scored by Danny Murphy and Zoltan Gera. Earlier in the season, the team reached the quarter finals of the FA Cup, eventually losing at home to Manchester United. Fulham finished the season in seventh place allowing them to enter the recently re-named Europa League for only the second time in their history.

The Fulham FC club official mascot is Billy the Badger who was the winning design sent in by Kyle Jackson after an online competition by the club. Billy the Badger wears the number 79 Fulham shirt, in reference to the club’s year of founding (1879). Controversy first surrounded Billy when he tried to cheer up Chelsea manager Avram Grant during a home match in front of the television cameras. Secondly, Billy was seen on television being sent off during the home game against Aston Villa on Sunday 3 February 2008, for breakdancing in the corner of the pitch after the referee had commenced the game. Billy blamed his badger hearing and eyesight for the incident, and apologised to referee Chris Foy. On Wednesday 11 March 2009 Billy walked across the goal during a match although it was not spotted by the referee. The former mascot for Fulham was Sir Craven of Cottage, the Knight. The cheerleaders were known as the Cravenettes, formerly the SW6ers.

Fulham fans consider their main rivals to be Chelsea. Despite this fixture not being played that often in the years preceding Fulham’s ascent to the top division, this is a clear local derby as Chelsea’s ground, Stamford Bridge, is in Fulham. However, it is only recently that the two teams have been competing in the same league. Chelsea supporters don’t consider Fulham to be their main rivals, sharing more intense rivalries with Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, West Ham United, Leeds, Millwall and more recently Liverpool. The reason for this is not certain but most likely owes to the fact the two clubs have spent many years in different divisions and Chelsea’s considerably larger fan base.

Fulham consider their secondary rivalries to be with QPR and Brentford. Fulham last played QPR in the 2000-01 season and Brentford in the 1997-98 season. They also have small rivalries with other London clubs, including West Ham and Crystal Palace.

Outside of London, Gillingham are still considered rivals to Fulham despite the two clubs having played in different divisions for the past eight years. Fulham and Gillingham have been involved in several high-tempered matches in the lower leagues. The death of a Fulham fan outside Gillingham’s Priestfield Stadium in 1998 has only served to intensify the bad relationship between the clubs’ fans.

Fulham have a large fan base and have millions of fans all over the world and people love to watch their matches live into the play ground. Fulham fans love to enjoy and experience the thrill during the Fulham match live in the ground. Getting football tickets for Fulham Matches is really a hard task for the Fulham fans. Ticket4football.com solves this problem by offering the Fulham football tickets, easy to get and relatively at cheaper price. So Fulham Tickets are just at the distance of one click from the fans.

Danny Whitaker (Port Vale – Free), Alan Fettis (Buty – Free), Kevin Sandwith (Chester City – Free), Kevin Townson (Northwich Victoria – Free), Tim Deasy (Released), Michael Briscoe (Released), Clyde Wijnhard (Released), Neil Morgan (Released).

Macclesfield Town were in danger of being dragged into last season’s League Two relegation fight but finished a comfortable six points above the relegation zone despite winning just two of their last six matches.

Brian Horton has a tough job on his hands in keeping the club in the Football League, having finished in the bottom half of the table for six of the last seven seasons following their relegation from League One at the end of the 1998/99 campaign.

Influential midfielder Danny Whittaker left for Port Vale on a free transfer to fulfil his ambition to play in a higher division after five years at Moss Rose while veteran former Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Alan Fettis joined Bury on a free.

Following the departure of Fettis, Horton has drafted in two younger goalkeepers to fight for the number one jersey next season. Former Newcastle youngster Jonny Brain arrived on a free transfer from Port Vale while Manchester United’s Tommy Lee has returned to the club. Lee was on loan at Moss Rose last season and played 12 matches, conceding 15 goals.

Horton has replaced last season’s 12 goal top scorer Clyde Wijnhard with Lincoln City’s leading marksman of last season, former Derby County striker Marvin Robinson and has also signed versatile Chesterfield forward Colin Heath, who also played in midfield during his loan spell at Swindon Town.

Verdict
Bar a remarkable performance in 2004/05, Macclesfield have been mainstays in the bottom half of League Two and even with the signing of Lincoln City’s top goal scorer Marvin Robinson this is unlikely to change next season.

19 Jan 10 Champions League – Second Round Preview

The 21-22 February will see the 16 remaining teams in the Champions League battle it out for a place in the coveted final held on 17 May in Paris. The second round fixtures have been decided so here is a run down of who is left in the competition and their chances of progressing to the quarter finals:

Inter Milan vs Ajax
Inter qualified comfortably from Group H as winners and have a favourable match against Ajax. The Dutch side qualified as runners up of Group A without too much trouble. Inter are overwhelming favourites to qualify for the quarter finals and striker Adriano, with four goals so far in this competition, poses the main threat. Manchester City.
Verdict: Inter to qualify at 2/5.

AC Milan vs Bayern Munich
Milan stuttered through the first round, with just three wins in six matches, before eventually topping the group ahead of PSV Eindoven. Andriy Shevchenko is the tournament’s most dangerous striker with six goals. However, Bayern Munich should not be underestimated. They dumped out Arsenal at this stage last season and were only edged out by a single goal against Chelsea in the quarter finals.
Verdict: AC Milan to qualify at 4/6.

Liverpool vs Benfica
The Reds take on the team who dumped Manchester United out of the Cup and are firm favourites to progress to the quarter finals. Liverpool were unbeaten and hadn’t conceded a goal in 11 league and Cup games until Sao Paulo denied them the World Club Championship on 18 December. Benfica’s 2-1 win over Manchester United was a shock result, but one they are unlikely to reproduce. Ronald Koeman’s side are only sixth in their domestic league and are likely to see their interest in the Champions League come to an end at this stage of the competition.
Verdict: Liverpool to qualify at 4/9.

Barcelona vs Chelsea
This was the most “anticipated” draw in terms of a replay of last season’s second phase encounter. Barcelona have won 13 games straight in La Liga, while Chelsea have topped the Premiership since August, losing just one match, against Manchester United, all season. Barcelona have also been unstoppable in Europe, winning five out of the six group. Despite the unquestionable talent at his disposal, Jose Mourinho may find his Chelsea team outgunned this time around.
Verdict: Barcelona to qualify at 5/6.

Lyon vs PSV Eindoven
Lyon are a team not to be underestimated in this season’s Champions League and won their group ahead of the glamorous Real Madrid. John Carew is Lyon’s top goalscorer with four goals while Juninho has laid on three assists. PSV will have their backers but Lyon remained undefeated in the group stage and should edge this encounter.
Verdict: Lyon to qualify at 1/2.

Villarreal vs Rangers
An upset could be on the cards in this encounter with Rangers a large price to qualify ahead of Spaniards Villarreal. Under-fire Rangers boss Alex McLeish may be ridiculously off-the-pace in the Scottish Premier, but he has got it right in Europe and Rangers have become the first side north of the border to venture this far in the competition. Villarreal scored just three times in six group stage matches.
Verdict: Rangers to qualify at 5/2.

Real Madrid vs Arsenal
This is the first time the two have clashed in Champions League and the bookmakers are having difficulty separating them. The Gunners won their five opening matches in the group stage before an experimental line-up drew 0-0 with Ajax in the final round of fixtures. Real Madrid have plenty of attacking power in their line up but are suspect at the back which could be to Arsenal’s advantage.
Verdict: Arsenal to qualify at 10/11.

Juventus vs Werder Bremen
Juventus stormed through the group stage, winning five out of six matches, with David Trezeguet scoring four goals. The “Old Lady” have already beaten and lost to German opposition in the competition this season, with two 2-1 results against giants Bayern Munich in the group stage. Werder Bremen are at their best at home, demonstrated in the 5-1 demolition of Panathinaikos and 4-3 victory over Udinese.
Verdict: Juventus to qualify at 4/11.

19 Jan 10 League Two Season Preview 2006/07 – Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury Town

Odds: 20/1

Last Five Seasons
2005/06 – 10 (League Two), 2004/05 – 21 (League Two), 2003/04 – 3 (Conference, Promoted), 2002/03 – 24 (League Two, Relegated), 2001/02 – 9 (League Two).

2005/06 Cup Progress
FA Cup Second Round vs Colchester United (h) – lost 2-1.
Carling Cup Second Round vs Sheffield United (h) – lost 4-3 on penalties with the score at 0-0 after extra time.
Football League Trophy Southern Section First Round vs Cheltenham Town (h) – lost 2-0.

Top Goal Scorer 2005/06: Colin McMenamin (striker) – 11 goals.

Players In
Ryan Esson (Aberdeen – Free), Daniel Hall (Oldham Athletic – Free), Chris MacKenzie (Chester City – Free), Stuart Drummond (Chester City – Free), Ben Davies (Chester City – Free).

Players Out
Joe Hart (Manchester City – £600,000), Glyn Thomspon (Hereford United – Free), Jamie McClen (Kidderminster Harriers – Free).

Shrewsbury Town missed out on the play-offs by three points last season but manager Gary Peters feels he has a squad that is ready to push for promotion next season. He believes the new signings he has made, including six young players aged 20 and under who all played 40 plus matches last season, are capable of hitting the ground running come August.

The signing of former Aberdeen goalkeeper Ryan Esson was a surprise but shows what ambition the Gay Meadow outfit has. Esson, a direct replacement for Joe Hart who joined Manchester City for £600,000, agreed a two year contract with the Shrews, bringing his 10 year stint at Aberdeen to an end. Esson started almost 100 matches for the Dons, including 18 appearances in the Scottish Premier League last season.

Shrewsbury managed to fend off interest from Dunfermline Athletic to lure the player to League Two and Esson has the backing of former Manchester United and Scotland goalkeeper Jim Leighton. The pair were team mates at Aberdeen before Leighton became Esson’s goalkeeping coach at Pittodrie.

Defender Richard Hope looks set to retain the captain’s armband next season, despite the arrival of Stewart Drummond from Chester City who is expected to compete for the role. Drummond took over as skipper last season when regular captain Kevin Sharp lost his place in the team to Neil Ashton.

Peters, keen to bolster his front line, has invited Shropshire born striker Andy Cooke to his pre season preparations. The former Telford United trainee is a free agent after being released by Bradford City.

Verdict
Despite the loss of goalkeeper Joe Hart, manager Gary Peters has bought well in the transfer market and has strengthened the squad in time for the new campaign. The Shrews narrowly missed out on the play offs last season but could be strong enough this time around to secure a top seven finish.

19 Jan 10 Walker’s Word – Premier League Betting Preview 29/30 April 2006

Manchester United could delay Chelsea’s celebrations by a further week while Portsmouth could relegate both West Bromwich Albion and Birmingham City this weekend writes David Walker.

Chelsea vs Manchester United
The clash of the form teams and the result which could confirm Chelsea’s retention of the Premiership should the Blues win. Chelsea have been impeccable in front of their own fans this season, winning 17 out of 18 Premiership matches. Indeed, the only time they have been beaten inside 90 minutes at home this season was against Barcelona in the Champions League. Manchester United are the Premiership’s form team, with 10 wins in their last 11 matches and the shocking goalless draw against Sunderland the only blot on an immaculate copybook.

United have won just four times at Stamford Bridge in 14 Premiership meetings while Chelsea have experienced the same success against the Reds on home soil. The match has finished all square on five occasions so historically there is not much to split the sides. Chelsea have won the last two meetings at home 1-0 while United’s last success came four years ago when they won 3-0.

Chelsea go into the match as favourites, but Manchester United could extend the title “race” to another week with victory at tempting odds.
Walker’s Word: Stubborn United to battle on @ 11/4.

Birmingham City vs Newcastle United
Birmingham are in desperate need of points if they are to avoid relegation and have slowly turned the corner by remaining unbeaten in their last three home games. However, with fellow relegation candidates Portsmouth also hitting form, Steve Bruce’s side may run out of games. The last two meetings between the pair have finished all square while Newcastle won 2-0 in 2002. Newcastle have hit a rich vein of form under caretaker manager Glenn Roeder and have won their last five matches. The Magpies will have a lot to say in the relegation battle, having beaten West Brom 3-0 last weekend and are unlikely to do a side which has not beaten them at St. Andrews since 1977 any favours.
Walker’s Word: Newcastle win @ 17/10.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa
Liverpool, fresh from dispatching Chelsea out of the FA Cup will be confident of beating lowly Aston Villa. The Reds have won their last two against Villa at and three in their last five meetings at Anfield. While Liverpool have won 14 out of 18 home matches this season, David O’Leary’s side have been dreadful on the road. They have lost their last four, including two heavy defeats: 5-0 against Arsenal 5-0 and 4-1 at Everton. Villa are likely to survive relegation by the skin of their teeth and a better goal difference, but points on the board won’t prevent them from playing like a side tumbling out of the division on Saturday.
Walker’s Word: One for the big hitters – home win @ 4/11.

Manchester City vs Fulham
After a promising start to the season, Manchester City have plummeted to the lower echelons of the Premiership and will see this match as a way of restoring some pride. The last two meetings between the sides have ended as draws, although City have had the better of previous encounters. The Citizens dished out a 4-1 hammering in 2003 and enjoyed a 4-0 win in 2000 and 3-0 victory in 1999 as both sides progressed through Division’s One and Two respectively. Added to this, Fulham not won at City since 1984 in the old second division and Stuart Pearce’s side could take full advantage and creep above them in the table.
Walker’s Word: Manchester City @ Evens.

Middlesbrough vs Everton
Middlesbrough have experience a congested fixture list in recent weeks due to their success in the FA and UEFA Cups. Despite some iffy results on the road, they remain a force at the Riverside Stadium and have won four of their last five at home, including the 3-0 defeat of Chelsea. Everton have not beaten Middlesbrough away since 2000, with Boro recording two wins and two draws since then. The clash against Everton will be Middlesbrough’s tenth match in April and with Steve McClaren’s side playing a crucial UEFA Cup semi-final on Thursday, the Toffees have a chance of returning to Merseyside with at least a point.
Walker’s Word: Low scoring draw @ 9/4.

Wigan Athletic vs Portsmouth
Wigan have not fared well recently but have done remarkably well overall in their first season in the top flight. Just three wins in their last 13 matches and one victory in their last eight at home will give a resurgent Portsmouth optimism in their battle to avoid the drop. The Latics beat Aston Villa 3-2 on 18 April, their first since beating Manchester City on Boxing Day, but suffered five home reverses in between. Harry Redknapp’s side could relegate West Brom and indeed Birmingham if they win and Steve Bruce’s side lose and are in pole position to do so. After a dismal campaign, Pompey have won five of their last eight matches including away victories at West Ham United and Fulham.
Walker’s Word: Portsmouth to survive @ 7/4.

Charlton Athletic vs Blackburn Rovers
Charlton are on course to finish comfortably in mid-table and this is largely thanks to their solid home form. The Addicks have not lost at The Valley since Arsenal beat them on Boxing Day and have won six out of nine home matches since that defeat. Alan Curbishley’s side have a good record against Rovers, winning three of the last four Premiership meetings in London. Despite Blackburn being on course for a place in Europe, they have not fared well away from home. Mark Hughes’ side have won just won in seven matches on the road, including a 2-1 defeat at Birmingham and 2-2 draw at Portsmouth in their last two away games.
Walker’s Word: Home form to prevail @ 13/8.

Sunday 30 April

Tottenham Hotspur vs Bolton Wanderers
Bolton have been the scourge of Spurs in recent seasons, winning the last two meetings at White Hart Lane and also enjoying a 1-0 win at the Reebok Stadium back in November. Spurs realistically need to win both of their final two games to confirm a fourth place finish ahead of North London rivals Arsenal and their solid home form could serve them well here. Martin Jol’s side have won 11 out of 18 matches in front of their own fans this season and will be buoyed by the 1-1 derby draw with Arsenal last weekend. Another home win is the sensible bet here.
Walker’s Word: Tottenham Hotspur @ 8/13.

19 Jan 10 League One Season Preview 2006/07 – Bradford City

Bradford City

Odds: 22/1

Last Five Seasons
2005/06 – 11 (League One), 2004/05 – 11 (League One), 2003/04 – 23 (Championship, Relegated), 2002/03 – 19 (Championship), 2001/02 – 15 (Championship).

2005/06 Cup Progress
FA Cup Second Round (replay) vs Barnsley (h) – lost 5-3 after extra time.
Carling Cup Second Round vs West Bromwich Albion – lost 4-1.
Football League Trophy Northern Section Quarter Final vs Kidderminster Harriers (a) – lost 2-1.

Top Goal Scorer 2005/06: Dean Windass (striker) – 20 goals.

Players In
Eddie Johnson (Manchester United – Free), Matt Clarke (Darlington – Free)

Players Out
Lewis Emanuel (Luton Town – Free), Jake Wright (Halifax Town – Free), Owen Morrison (Released), Danny Cadamarteri (Released), Lee Crooks (Released), Andy Cooke (Released), Kevin Sanasy (Released), Danny Forrest (Released).

Bradford City have established themselves as a solid mid table League One club following their problems with administration stemming from their relegation from the Premier League over five years ago.

Much of their limited success last season was down to evergreen striker Dean Windass, who bagged 20 goals at the ripe old age of 36. Such were his goal scoring exploits, he was even linked with a move to Premiership new boys Wigan Athletic last season.

Windass will be 37 during this campaign so Bradford have signed Manchester United youngster Eddie Johnson as a possible long term replacement. The 21 year old striker was also wanted by Crewe Alexandra, following a loan spell at Gresty Road last season, but signed a two year contract at Valley Parade. Johnson also spent time on loan in the Championship with Coventry City during the 2004/05 season.

However, Johnson damaged ankle ligaments during a pre season friendly against Boston United and will miss the first month of the new season, while left back Lewis Emanuel’s departure to Luton Town leaves manager Colin Todd short in that position. Todd bolstered his defence with the signing of out of contract Darlington defender Matt Clarke. The former Halifax Town centre back has been brought in to replace Jamaica defender Damion Stewart who left the club to join Queens Park Rangers at the end of the season.

Bradford also cancelled the contract of midfielder Bobby Petta to allow him to join Australian league outfit Adelaide United. Petta began his career at Feyenoord, before joining Ipswich Town and then Celtic.

Verdict
Bradford City have finished in eleventh place for the last two seasons and nothing suggests that will improve this time around. Much will depend on whether Dean Windass can keep going and whether Eddie Johnson can score goals at this level.

19 Jan 10 Everton in Premier League 2009-10

Everton Football Club are an English professional football club from the city of Liverpool. Having competed in the top division for a record 107 seasons, they have played more top-flight league games than any other English team and have won the League Championship 9 times — the fourth highest of any team. The club competes in the Premier League, being ever-present since the league was founded in 1992.

Formed in 1878, Everton were founding members of The Football League in 1888 and won their first league championship two seasons later. Following four league titles and two FA Cup wins, Everton experienced a lull in the immediate post World War Two period until a revival in the 1960s, winning two league championships and an FA Cup. The mid-1980s represented their most recent period of success, with two League Championship successes, an FA Cup, and the 1985 European Cup Winners’ Cup—their first continental trophy. The club’s most recent major trophy was the 1995 FA Cup.

The club have a large fanbase and regularly attracts high attendances, averaging over 36,000, 95% of stadium capacity. Everton have a notable rivalry with neighbours Liverpool F.C. and matches between the two sides are known as the Merseyside Derby. Liverpool F.C. were formed in 1892 by a breakaway group consisting of Everton’s former president and a few players. The dispute also resulted in Everton leaving Anfield, their home ground at the time. The club have been based at their current home ground, Goodison Park, since 1892. Plans to move to a new 50,000 seater expandable stadium in Kirkby on the Liverpool city border have been delayed due to a public inquiry.

The club’s home colours have traditionally been royal blue and white, with notable footballers donning the Everton shirt. The most famous is Dixie Dean, who scored a record 60 league goals in the 1927–28 season. Since 2000, the club has annually recognised notable former players, nominating an “Everton Giant” at the beginning of each season.

After the Heysel Stadium disaster and the subsequent ban of all English clubs from continental football, Everton lost the chance to compete for more European trophies. A large proportion of the title-winning side was broken up following the ban. Kendall himself moved to Athletic Bilbao after the 1987 title triumph and was succeeded by assistant Colin Harvey.

Everton were founder members of the Premier League in 1992, but struggled to find the right manager. Howard Kendall had returned in 1990 but could not repeat his previous success, while his successor, Mike Walker, was statistically the least successful Everton manager to date. When former Everton player Joe Royle took over in 1994 the club’s form started to improve; his first game in charge was a 2–0 victory over derby rivals Liverpool. Royle dragged Everton clear of relegation, and also led the club to the FA Cup for the fifth time in its history, defeating Manchester United 1–0 in the final.

The cup triumph was also Everton’s passport to the Cup Winners’ Cup—their first European campaign in the post-Heysel era. Progress under Joe Royle continued in 1995–96 as they climbed to sixth place in the Premiership.

The following season, 1996–97, was not as successful and the club finished in fifteenth place. Royle quit in March. Club captain, Dave Watson, was given the manager’s job temporarily and he helped the club to Premiership survival. Howard Kendall was appointed Everton manager for the third time in 1997, but the appointment proved unsuccessful as Everton finished seventeenth in the Premiership; only avoiding relegation due to their superior goal difference over Bolton Wanderers. Former Rangers manager Walter Smith then took over from Kendall in the summer of 1998 but only managed three successive finishes in the bottom half of the table.

The Everton board finally ran out of patience with Smith and he was sacked in March 2002 with Everton in real danger of relegation. The current manager, David Moyes, was his replacement and delivered Everton to a safe finish in fifteenth place. After that harrowing season, Everton finished seventh, seventeenth, fourth (their highest ever Premiership finish) and eleventh. It was under his management that Wayne Rooney broke into the first team, before being sold to Manchester United for a club record fee of £27 million.

Moyes has broken the club record for highest transfer fee paid on four occasions, signing James Beattie for £6 million in January 2005,[14] Andy Johnson for £8.6 million in summer 2006, Yakubu Aiyegbeni for £11.25 million in summer 2007, and Marouane Fellaini for £15 million in September 2008.

2006–07 saw Everton finish sixth in the league and attain UEFA Cup qualification. In 2007, Everton completed the takeover of the Toxteth Tigers basketball team, with the rebranding of Liverpool’s first ever top-flight basketball franchise, the Everton Tigers. 2007-08 saw Everton once again gain European football with a fifth place league finish, although they were eliminated from the 2008-09 UEFA Cup prior to the group stages by Standard Liege. The domestic 2008–09 season saw Everton reach the FA Cup Final for the first time since 1995.

The kit today remains royal blue shirts, white shorts and white socks although when playing teams away who also wear white shorts Everton typically wear all blue. For the 2008–09 season, the away kit is a predominantly white shirt with a navy and grey trim across the chest, accompanied with navy shorts and socks. A third kit was issued consisting of luminous yellow shirt and socks with dark blue shorts, which will also be used as an away kit in European games. Everton’s goalkeepers will wear a lime green shirt with light grey shorts and socks at home and all black away.

Everton’s current shirt sponsors are Chang Beer. Previous sponsors include NEC, Hafnia, Danka, one2one and Kejian. For the 2008–09 season Everton became the first Premier League team to sell junior replica jerseys without the current name or logo of its main sponsor Chang beer, following a recommendation from the Portman Group that alcoholic brand names be removed from kits sold to children. Everton’s current kit manufacturers are Le Coq Sportif, who replaced Umbro from the 2009-2010 season.

The club currently has three megastores, one located near to Goodison Park on Walton Lane, one located at Birkenhead’s Pyramids shopping centre, and, most recently opened, a store in the Liverpool One shopping complex, named ‘Everton Two’.

Everton originally played in the southeast corner of Stanley Park, which is the site for the new Liverpool F.C. stadium, with the first official match taking place in 1879. In 1882, a man named J. Cruitt donated land at Priory Road which became the club’s home before they moved to Anfield, which was Everton’s home until 1892.

Ever since those events, a fierce rivalry has existed between Everton and Liverpool, albeit one that is generally perceived as more respectful than many other derbies in English football. This was illustrated by a chain of red and blue scarves that were linked between the gates of both grounds across Stanley Park as a tribute to the Liverpool fans killed in the Hillsborough disaster.

Goodison Park, the first major football stadium to be built in England, was opened in 1892. Goodison Park has staged more top-flight football games than any other ground in the United Kingdom and was the only English club ground to host a semi-final at the 1966 FIFA World Cup. It was also the first English ground to have undersoil heating, the first to have two tiers on all sides.

On 16 June 2006, it was announced that Everton had entered into talks with Knowsley Council and Tesco over the possibility of building a new 55,000 seat stadium in Kirkby. The stadium is expandable to over 60,000. The club took the unusual move of giving its supporters a say in the club’s future by holding a ballot on whether or not to move to Kirkby. The ballot returned 59.27% in favour. However, an inquiry into the move to the Kirkby stadium was filed 6 August 2008, delaying the construction by at least 18 months.

The Football Association’s bid for the 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cup includes a bid from the city of Liverpool to host some games. Everton have stated that without a new stadium the club would not be able to host such matches.

Everton have a large fanbase with the ninth highest average attendance in England. The reason for being a lowly ninth is that Goodison Park is constrained to a low capacity.
