12 Jan 10 Greenland, Alcoa Plan to Construct Hydro-powered Aluminum Smelter
The Greenland Home Rule Cabinet earlier agreed to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Alcoa Inc., world’s leading producer of primary aluminum. The agreement covers a feasibility study for constructing an aluminum smelter with a 340,000 metric-ton-per-year capacity in Greenland.
The agreement also encompasses a hydroelectric power system and related infrastructure improvements, plus a port. The accurate size and expenses for the overall deal will be announced when the project plan is finalized.
Under the MOU, both Greenland and Alcoa will begin site selection, environmental studies, engineering assessments, and other aspects of the project. If the viability of the project is proved, ground breaking for the hydroelectric power system would be expected in 2010 and the smelter in 2012. The smelter could then start operation by the end of 2014.
“Alcoa has a disciplined growth strategy, as aluminum demand is strong and consumption is expected to grow significantly over the next decade. We have nearly 120 years of experience in developing and operating aluminum smelters around the world in a sustainable manner, sensitive to the environment, and valued by the communities in which Alcoa operates,” said Alcoa Chairman and CEO Alain Belda. “We will bring our technology and management capabilities to this venture to ensure the development of a highly-competitive, environmentally-friendly smelter that adheres to our stringent Values and delivers sustainable development.”
“The aluminum industry offers an excellent opportunity that we may in Greenland exploit our hydropower resources for the benefit of the country’s occupational and business development,” stated Minister of Trade, Labor and Vocational Training, Siverth K. Heilmann. “At the same time the project is in full accordance with the Cabinet’s long-term goal of replacing hydrocarbon-based energy production with hydropower, one of the reasons being concern for the global environment.
“I have visited smelters in different parts of the world, and through personal experience learned about Alcoa’s consideration for the environment and commitment to ensure that a future smelter will also in Greenland become an asset to the local community, socially and educationally, as well as economically,” said Heilmann.
Asked about the choice of Alcoa as partner, Heilmann explained, “Alcoa has shown their determination to invest considerable resources in the development of this project together with us. Simultaneously, they have been ready to meet Greenland’s requirements as to the pace of the project development, the environmental process, efforts in training and education etc.”
Preferred sites for the proposed smelter will be collaboratively identified by the Greenland Home Rule Government and Alcoa. Upon completion, this development project would mark the largest investments in the state’s history. Additionally, the investment is expected to kindle economic growth and manufacturing variety, create up to 600 direct, stable jobs, and contribute to amplify Greenland’s overall productivity and economic autonomy.
The investment could pave way for more powerful and high-performance auto equipment and parts like the KYB.

1: Take control of your future.
You will most likely be the surviving spouse. Or you may be divorced and single. Or you have always been single. Which ever is your reason, you are on your own. Do not wait for Prince Charming to come a whisk you away on his white horse. What if he never shows up? If you are the surviving spouse, where you part of the financial planning? You should be. This is YOUR life and you need to take control of it. None of you know where your futures lie, but wishing, hoping and praying that it will all work out is naive and will land you in big trouble.
2: Don’t scoff at working women.
Women tend to spend less time in the workforce. The average women spends 15 years away, (raising children, caring for elderly parents) while the average man will be away for 1.6 years.
This means women have lower benefits from company pensions, 401(k) plans as well as Social Security benefits.
It appears women are “punished” for raising children and caring for elders. Remember, no wages equals no credits equals no Social Security. Our system is not kind to women.
3: Keep a keen eye on your income, savings and spending habits.
Of all the elderly persons with income levels below the poverty line, more than 70 % are women. If married, more than 1/2 were much better off financially before their husband died.

7: Working longer than you anticipated may be the key
Women may need to work longer to achieve a stable, livable retirement. One half of working women do not have access to pensions or company retirement plans. Many women don’t earn enough to save in order to fund their retirement. The truth continues to be that women working full time still only earn 76 % o what men earn.
8: Baby Boomer women are the most educated in history.
Baby Boomer women are more likely to be divorced or never married than women in other generations. That in itself requires women to work more years. Although Baby Boomer women have more education and stronger workforce participation than earlier generation, being divorced or never married may create a deficit in retirement income.
9: Don’t count of your home equity
Planning on converting the equity in your home into retirement income could back fire on you. Housing values are not always stable and tend to either level off or decline. Although equity in your home may provide additional monies to your nest egg, don’t make it your primary funding source.
10: Be healthy minded NOW
Keep on top of your health now, not later. Exercise, eat well and get all the necessary annual medical check ups you need. How you take care of yourself now may be the crystal ball of your future.
