At Pushkar, a sacred town in Rajasthan, one can literally feel a unique experience. Especially if one is there during the time of the one of a kind fair – this fair is the biggest and most eagerly awaited cattle fair across the world.
Situated in the middle of the desert, Pushkar is a sleepy, charming little town in the Rajasthani city of Ajmer. There are several temples here that are located along the Pushkar Lake. Pushkar is home to the only temple of Lord Brahma in India. Legend has it that Lord Brahma was on his way to search for a suitable place to perform a ‘Yagna’ (a fire sacrifice) and while contemplating, a lotus fell from his hand on the earth and water sprouted from that place and a holy lake was formed. To this day Pushkar is a holy place of pilgrimage for Hindus.
Pushkar festivals are associated with the colorful culture of Rajasthan. In fact, you can say that it infuses life and spirit in the carnival that makes it special and distinct from many of the festivals. Well, it is one of the most renowned festivals, which draws a huge number of tourists. Now you must be wondering that how it is celebrated though you have a little knowledge about it. Pushkar festivals in India are celebrated in winters. Although the dates of the festivals are not fixed, but alike other Hindu festivals, Pushkar festival dates are dependent upon the lunar calendar. According to the Hindu almanac, the fair is held during the full moon in the month of Kartik, traditionally in November. Come November, and the desert livens up with the hustle bustle of people and more with cattle and camels.
This is not just a camel fair but also a cultural phenomenon where one experiences vivacious revelry as the atmosphere is alive with colorfully dressed devotees, musicians, acrobats, folk dancers, traders, comedians, holy men and tourists exploring this fabulous fair in Pushkar. Although originally meant for trading of camel and cattle only, the Pushkar Camel Fair has now become a major tourist attraction. Highlights of the Pushkar Camel Fair are colorful, vibrant bazaars, enchanting folk music and sports involving camels.
On the concluding day, people rush towards the bathing Ghats for a holy dip while chanting mantras and prayers. At dusk, thousands of small earthen lamps are lighted and kept on delicate leaf boats and released in the placid waters of the Pushkar Lake and these iridescent lamps create a gloriously peaceful sight. This brings to an end India’s largest camel fair.
It is an elaborate affair, as tourists and cattle traders from all over the country swarm the place during this carnival or fair. It is amazing to see the traders negotiating deals over their prized animals, such as camels, horses, cows, goats and sheep. In fact, the atmosphere becomes lively on the concluding day as people take dips on the banks of lake while chanting mantras. At dusk, lots of small earthen lamps are lightened and kept on delicate leaf boats and released in the Pushkar Lake, making it gloriously peaceful sight. This brings to an end India’s largest camel fair. Thus, this festival is just not about striking deals but is a phenomenon that one experiences during the stay at Pushkar. Hence, do not waste time and make your hotel reservations well at advance as the colorful festival is about to come and you do not want to miss it!

Truly royal, truly grand! These are words that spring forth from the mouth of any visitor vacationing for the first time in Rajasthan. As the golden orb sets behind the sand dunes, the land reverberates with the tales of Rajput valor bringing alive the music and its’ unique tapestry of tradition. This is the uniqueness of state which enhances the golden landscape further. As if to add to the already enriched landscape, yet another feature has been added in the form of Pushkar temple. This is the temple which is unique in the respect that it is the only temple dedicated to Lord Brahma in India. There are a number of temples dedicated to the Hindu trinity of Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma, but there is none for Lord Brahma. The architecture of the temple dates back to 14th century and it stands on a high platform near the Pushkar Lake.
The sanctum sanctorum consists of a silver turtle embossed in the floor. Hundreds of silver coins litter the floor around the turtle and this includes walls of the temple. Pushkar temple has been restored by Nahadarava in the seventh century who cleaned up the lake and got an embankment built on the river Luni. He also rebuilt twelve resting places and ghats on the three sides of the lake. The surrounding area is called Parasara Brahamanas due to the presence of descendents of sage Parasara. There is a legend associated with the Pushkar temple which mentions that the gods released a swan with a lotus in its beak in the same area. Further, the legend says that the gods had already decided wherever the lotus would fall, Lord Brahma will perform ‘yagya’ the holy fire in which sacred oblations are poured along with the mantras. Hence the place was named as Pushkar which means ‘born due to a flower’.
The place is also famous for the Pushkar Brahamanas whose origins can be traced to the place. The place is famed for its other equally important list of pilgrimages and is situated about 14 km North West from Ajmer. In Pushkar temple, images of peacock considered as the vehicle of Saraswati, adorn the walls and Brahma is shown in a life-size form with four hands and four faces, representing four directions. The gateway of the temple is adorned with the image of ‘Hans’ (goose, the official carrier of Brahma) further crowned with a red spire. The idol of Lord Brahma is adorned on the one side by a small idol of goddess Gayatri and is called Chaumurti. The holy place is one of the five sacred dhams (pilgrimage sites for the Hindus) and is known as ‘tirth raj’ or the king of pilgrimage sites. In the recent years, it has evolved as one of the most popular destination for the tourists.
Besides the Pushkar temple, the placed is equally famous for its annual Pushkar Camel Fair. An environmental problem of massive magnitude in the recent years has engulfed the sacred Pushkar temple. The ecology of the lake has degraded due to the inflow of tourists on a wide scale for whom the accommodations have been constructed on the shores of lake. It has only added to the ugliness of the place which had been already damaged to manifold proportions by the continuous deforestation of the surrounding area. With the greenery cover gone for good, the place is yet one barren spot added to the desolate landscape. The best solution to the problem can come from temple authorities themselves, who are brimming with revenue in the form of donations from the pilgrims themselves.

Located on the banks of the Pushkar Lake, the Pushkar temple is the only temple of Lord Brahma in India. Being the only Brahma temple in India, the Pushkar temple has great significance. Millions of people in the country visit the shrine each year to worship Lord Brahma. Despite being one of the many temples in Pushkar, it is this Brahma temple that enjoys most popularity.
The temple traces its roots back to the 14th century. It is believed that Lord Brahma performed a yagya here along with other gods and goddesses. Incidentally a lotus fell off from the hands of Brahma and fell in the Pushkar valley. This is how the town derived its name, Pushp means flower and Kar means hand.
Soon after the flower fell off the hand of Brahma, the Pushkar Lake appeared miraculously. This is why the divine stature of the lake. The temple stands on a raised platform. This raised platform gives the temple a distinctive edge and adds to its prominence. Beautiful marble steps lead to this raised platform.
The main doorway of the temple features the image of a Hans. As per mythological epics, the Hans were the vehicle of Lord Brahma. This Hans was imbibed on the main doorway to segregate the temple from other temples that were nearby.
One of the most prominent features of the Pushkar temple is the lovely turtle carved in silver. This beautiful silver turtle is perhaps the most adorned feature of the temple. This silver turtle sits facing the sanctum sanctorum.
The flooring of the temple is in black and white cheques. This chequered floor is further adorned with silver coins. These coins were donated by devotes of this temple and are embossed with the name along with the date of birth or anniversary of their loved ones.
A four headed image of the Brahma graces this temple. Lord Brahma rests in a cross-legged position with Savitri on his right and Gayatri on the left side. Mythological legend has it that Savitri was the wife of Lord Brahma. Gayatri is believed to be the local maid whom Brahma married in order to be able to perform the puja. The temple also houses a statue of Lord Vishnu and life-sized dwarpals (door men) and Garuda pillars (a mythical bird, in gold).
Though the temple has its fair share of devotees flowing in all year long, people from all across the country flock the temple during the Kartika Purnima. As per the Indian calendar, the Kartik Purnima falls in the month of October-November. The Pushkar festival also takes place during this time.
This is the season when the whole town of Pushkar comes to life with joyous activities and festivities. During the Pushkar festival people also take a dip in the holy Pushkar Lake and worship Lord Brahma, who is believed to be the creator of this universe. Many people across the country consider this period of Kartik Purnima as highly auspicious. Make sure that you get the bookings one before festival season lest you will be deprived to feel the essence of spiritual beauty.
