How can this new iterateraition of an old threat get by up to date real-time anti virus scanners? I’ve now seen it infect systems running up to date Avast and also Micro Trend Officescan. I would image it has passed through others.

From what I understand, this is the same crap as XP Antivirus 2007 and 2008. Also have read that it morphs into Antivirus VIP. Anyway, I’m mainly confused as to how it it bypassing scanners? I suspect (because I was not present when the infection occurred) that when an infected web page popped up a message to click on a link to download a repair for the poor users infected system, that they clicked on it and {purposely} installed the virus. But still, it seems to disable resident scanners.

19 Jan 10 How Effective Is Free Antivirus And Spyware Software?

The free antivirus programs are most definitely not better than any other. They are passable and decent, but some paid antivirus programs are so much better. Kaspersky is great, as well as Nod32. Twice as good as the free anti-virus programs, but not without a nominal fee. Spyware programs are a different story. Ad Aware, AVG AntiSpyware, Spy ware Doctor, Spybot Search and Destroy, and SuperAntiSpyware are all great free spyware programs.

The most important thing, however, is your behavior. If you behave properly, you don’t need any type of antispyware or antivirus programs. The problem is, almost no one on the internet behaves properly these days. In either case, if you aren’t willing to pay, I recommend using one of the mentioned free antivirus programs (preferably AVG or Avast) and a couple of the antivirus programs (one of which will be actively blocking spyware, as well as to run full scans of your computer at least once a month. The second will be used for a secondary full spyware scan along with the first.

Also, you should watch your behavior. Do not click links in your email. If you want to go to a URL someone (even someone you know) has sent you, type the URL out in the address bar. Be very careful about downloading anything. You should make absolute sure that it is safe. Some websites can infect your computer by using Active X controls, so also be very careful about what Active X controls you allow when surfing.

Most of the computers are infected because of clicking on the links in popular social networking sites like facebook and myspace. Avoid watching pornography sites since most of the adult sites ask the user to download a codec to view the downloaded video file and spread spyware in the computer.

Most of the computers are also infected because of using P2P Software like Lime wire. Lime wire, infact most P2P software is plagued with spyware/malware, which in turn will mess your system up incredibly. There is an older version of Lime wire which contains no spyware. However, it’s the systems you download music from which will have the major source of Virus’ and spyware to help mess up your system and time.

When you download a track from limewire, you do so by downloading it off someone else PC, in turn they could be infected, passing on the infection to you. Also with it being P2P, they will have access to your system and all of the music that you have, not very safe hey!

If you want to download music, I would suggest doing it off a legit music site, like I tunes or HM V for example, this way you’re getting music pretty cheap and staying safe in the process. There are even some sights that for a small sum, let you download as many songs as you want over 28days.

My advice is keeping it safe, even if it’s an old PC you don’t really care about. Piracy laws have really been clamped down, and you never know, the officers could come knocking on your door.

19 Jan 10 Freeware Antivirus Software

Nowadays, the sheer number of malicious programs and software exploits has made it so that no computer is ever considered Internet worthy without an antivirus program. This is further complicated by the fact that antivirus softwares tend to be either expensive or not effective. Luckily, there is Avast 4 Home Edition, an antivirus that is as effective as the most expensive PC security suites, yet available for download free of charge.

There are lot of free antivirus programs on the net but only few does the job that is needed to prevent viris and clean it once it gets infected. Avast 4 Home Edition has a lot of features that a user hopes needs to have in his anti-virus software. There are a lot of things that has been included in this software and Avast is intelligent enough to know where it should check, such as the overlooked places where viruses and other malicious files can possibly enter. These places include the following:

- Web traffic;
- Mail;
- Peer-to-peer programs; and
- Instant Messengers.

Avast 4 Home Edition is very easy to configure which is especially beneficial for novice users or people who have no prior knowledge of how to set up antivirus programs. It also includes an Outlook Express archive unpacker which scans email attachments from Outlook Express, perfect for helping you weed out harmful attachments from real attachments that came from friends and family. This also gives you a much needed sense of security as you feel free to open any attachments without worrying if the person who sent the mail to you is infected.

The main features included in Avast 4 Home Edition are:

1. Real-time protection:
2. On-Demand Scanner:
3. Web Shield: this monitors the incoming traffic from the Internet.
4. Email real-time protection: It monitors the incoming and outgoing emails from any SMTP, IMAP4 and POP3 email client.
5. Peer-to-peer programs: Checks the files being downloaded from Kazaa and BitTorrent. Also files from IM messengers specifically ICQ and Miranda are checked together with NNTP newsgroups.
6. Automatic Updates: Like other free antivirus software, this application checks for necessary updates. The updates are needed to make the application more robust when it comes to dealing with viruses and other malicious files.
7. Log viewer: The user will be able to review the threats that were detected by the software and the action taken.
8. Virus Chest: This is where the viruses and other malicious files are placed or quarantined when it is not removed or cleaned. This prevents further infection and also allows avast to collect more information about the thread, making other PCs safer in the future against the threat in question.
9. Boot Time Scanner: The application scans the disks at the same time Windows does CHKDSK.
10. Antivirus Screensaver, which allows Avast to run and scan your system everytime you let your computer idle.

19 Jan 10 A Guide to Free Antivirus Software on the Web

There is no need to go into detail as to why your computer needs protection from viruses especially online. Fortunately, effective and free antivirus software can be downloaded on the Web. Some of the most popular ones are listed below.

Norton Security Scan

This free antivirus software has several features that new or busy computer users will like. The first is that it is very easy to use. There is only one button, labeled start. Clicking this will initiate the virus scanning process, during which the program will remove any threats that are detected in your computer.

With only a single button, users do not have to worry about configuring various settings. Another advantage of this application is that it can perform updates regularly. Also, you can set up another antivirus program if you like and there will be no incompatibility issues whatsoever.

AVG Antivirus

For those users that want to have total control over their free antivirus software, the AVG Antivirus Free Edition will be ideal. Besides scanning for viruses, the program also has a Rescue Disk which you can use to create important configuration files so in the event you are unable to boot from the hard disk, the Rescue Disk will be able to perform that function instead.

In addition, this free antivirus software provides a scanner for spotting viruses in email attachments, and a scheduler. The website updates the virus list regularly, and can quarantine a file that has a virus (you may want to do this in case you want to try and remove the virus instead of deleting it). This software can run in Windows versions from 95 up to XP.

Avira Antivir Personal

The Avira Antivir Personal is a quick and efficient free antivirus software that runs on Windows and Unix. Apart from being able to remove Trojan horses, rootkits, phising and other malicious software, the application is also noted for its speed, up to 15 to 20% quicker than most other applications.

Avast! Antivirus Home Edition

The Avast! Antivirus Home Edition is the free version of the Avast antivirus software, and comes with several features. The program regularly updates both the antivirus and software so you can be sure that any new viruses will be detected easily.

The program is also capable of removing spyware, malware, and other applications that can affect your software. Unlike other applications, these can be used with different web browsers without causing any system crashes. The software also has the Network Shield that shelters your files from any viruses and worms that may infect your computer. The appearance can also be changed with its skin selectors.

This free antivirus software can run in several types of Windows operating systems, from Windows 2000 to XP and Vista. For those with older systems, the program is also compatible with Windows ME, NT, 98 and even 95.

Sheltering your files and personal information from online hackers is a must, and with the plethora of free antivirus software on the Web, you can get the ones you need at no cost and surf at ease.
