19 Jan 10 English Cricket – England Stars Given the Nod to Join Ipl
I haven’t really been able to watch cricket played live but judging by the scenes relayed by the telly of English cricket matches, it always conveys a party atmosphere, of people really enjoying the experience of watching a match live. The recent turmoil that the English Cricket team underwent almost divided the team and shattered the hearts of avid English cricket supporters.
I guess the decision of the English and Wales Cricket Board to grant England’s top cricketers to join the Indian Premier League and be out of English soil for three weeks is good for the lads. Just as a footballer always like to play football especially if he earns a living by playing, so do the cricketers. They haven’t really been able to concentrate that much in playing cricket with the internal problems and with the prospect of facing the world’s best players at the IPL in a twenty20 match, it can prove to be a valuable experience. England recently lost 4-0 in their one-day series against the Indian national team last November.
The IPL or the Indian Premier League is a twenty20 cricket competition started last year and was formed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India with Lalit Modi as its Chairman and IPL Commissioner. He is also the BCCI Vice President. Under his stewardship the IPL has turned into a very lucrative league and a huge success that the Professional Cricketers Association has asked the ECB to seek a compromise solution to enable the English national players the chance to play in the league. Because of the ECB’s refusal to release the players for the league last year due to a conflict in schedule as the IPL inaugural season coincided with the County Championship season last year and New Zealand’s tour of England.
With the go ahead signal given, Indian supporters of the IPL will now have the chance to watch their favorite English players in action. Topping that list are former English Cricket team skipper Kevin Pietersen and all-rounder Andrew Flintoff. Most members of the English national team have been offered contracts and are already included in the pool of players to be auctioned to the teams on February 6. Aside from Pietersen and Flintoff those who are centrally contracted to play for England are James Anderson, Ian Bell, Stuart Broad, Paul Collingwood, Alastair Cook, Stephen Harmison, Monty Panesar, Ryan Sidebottom, Andrew Strauss and Michael Vaughan.
At least six of these men might join the IPL. They were given permission to leave for a period of three weeks. The IPL season starts on the 10th of April, seven days after England completes its series against the West Indies. A return match also against the same opponent shall be played at Lords on the 6th of May making the nationals in the IPL will be back just five days before the start. It may be a tight window, but the PCA could not prevent these people the opportunity to earn lucrative deals while playing the sport they all love. And I do agree with that.

India never had a rich sporting history in comparison to other countries. If we take Olympics as a benchmark, India has always struggled to find a place in the top of the medals tally. Besides a few selected sports such as hockey and cricket, India has not made a major mark on any other sporting event if we look back at the history of Indian sports. The problem always is related to the development of good sporting infrastructure in the country and the perceptions of the people towards sports as a career launcher.
However, things have started moving ahead for the good if we look back at the past few years of performances by Indian sports stars. Government of India Sports Ministry has started making huge investments into the development of other sports in India. Many sports bodies have been set up to look after different sports in India. These bodies function in coordination with the government in ensuring that best of the facilities are provided to Indian athletes and sports stars.
These recent developments have started producing excellent results for Indian sports. We have witnessed a flurry of individual accomplishments in other important Indian sports. Vishwanathan Anand the maestro of Chess, is another famous Indian sports icon who has been a world champion on more than one occasion. Pankaj Advani, the reigning world billiards champion is another name that comes to mind when we talk about the rapid transformation of Indian sports. These sporting icons of India have brought name and fame to India by their many achievements and have proved time and time again that they are nothing short of best when it comes to sports.

Whatever this season is, I was tired of the dancing, judges, and contestants. The entire time Chloris Leachman was on, I refused to watch a second of it. But then along came Gilles Marini, Lil Kim, Ty Murray, Melissa Rycroft, The Woz, Julianne’s boyfriend, Chuck Wicks, Denise Richards, Shawn Johnson, and a few others that really didn’t interest me.
Who really did interest me? Gilles Marini was the one I couldn’t wait to see. Marini was on my radar after watching the Sex and the City movie where he played Dante. He did not disappoint in Dancing with the Stars! Most of his dances ramp up the heat in the ballroom. Carrie Ann Inaba even mentioned how lucky his wife was.
Just like her short lived show on E! Network, Denise Richards proved to be equally dull and talentless on Dancing with the Stars The Woz may be a computer genius and he definitely seemed like a great guy, but he just didn’t have the moves on the dance floor. Chuck Wicks gave it his all, and lasted longer than most. I didn’t really like Lil’ Kim until I saw her dance so amazingly well. Derek Huff did wonders with his choreography and inspiration. They obviously had real chemistry, and they demonstrated a high level of talent and skill as well. How stunning was it then that Lil’ Kim was voted off ahead of several less talented dance partners.
The final four, as I write, are Melissa and Tony, Ty and Chelsie, Gilles and Cheryl, Shawn and Mark. You may recall the song-smith Jewel was originally slated for this seasons cast of celebs. However, Jewel fractured bones in her legs just a couple of days before the premiere and Melissa had to fill in. She showed immediately that she had ballet training. Her performances have been close to perfection, earning her perfect scores in the last show. But perfect scores don’t always mean you won’t be voted off. Just like Sabrina Bryan. She received a perfect score in another season and was eliminated early. The celeb dancer who has shown real progress is World Champion rodeo cowboy Ty Murry. Having a rodeo star background gave him a wide, diverse fan base during voting, but did little in the way of preparing him for dancing. Just like in Beijing, Olympic Gold Medal winner Shawn Johnson has showed us some outstanding steps with the precision we would expect from the diminutive gymnast. And rounding this amazing cast of celebrities is Gilles Marini who didn’t make a move I didn’t absolutely love.
Just which couple has the chops and the votes to win the judge’s hearts? One dancing duo will be sent home this week. Who will it be? After that the three last dance teams have a final dance-off. I can’t wait until the final show airs! Luckily I have a DVR for a backup just in case something comes up.

Whatever this season promised to bring, I had become tired of all of the dancing, drama, judges, and contestants. I refused to watch the whole time Chloris Leachman was on. Melissa Rycroft, The Woz, Julianne’s boyfriend, Chuck Wicks, Denise Richards, Shawn Johnson, and a few others came along too that really didn’t interest me either.
Who really did interest me? It was french actor Gilles Marini who pulled it all together for the eighth season of Dancing with the Stars I really got interested in him after I saw the Sex and the City movie we he portrayed the character Dante. Proving he’s no one-act wonder, Gilles shows his other talents on Dancing with the Stars. Most of his dances ramp up the heat in the ballroom. Carrie Ann Inaba explained that Gilles wife is a very lucky girl to have a husband with such great moves.
Denise Richards was disappointing. She lacked talent and personality, two very important attributes for anyone appearing on the program. The Woz had the personality, but no talent. Stepping up with great technicality, Derek Huff won me with his brilliant choreography. They were a team that showed talent as well as chemistry. But not all was lost – someone did hold my attention. I could not wait to watch Gilles Marini expertly dance during each episode. After watching the Sex and the City movie, he really spiked my interest. He did not disappoint in Dancing with the Stars! Most of his dances ramp up the heat in the ballroom. Denise Richards was a big disappointment, lacking talent as well as personality. The Woz may be a computer genius and he definitely seemed like a great guy, but he just didn’t have the moves on the dance floor. Chuck Wicks gave it his all, and lasted longer than most. I didn’t really like Lil’ Kim until I saw her dance so amazingly well. Derek Huff showed what expert choreography and showmanship can bring to the dance floor with his amazing routines. They proved to be a powerful duo when they showed that they had chemistry along with their talent. It was a shock that she was eliminated with four others remaining.
The final four, as I write, are Melissa and Tony, Ty and Chelsie, Gilles and Cheryl, Shawn and Mark. When Jewel fractured the tibia in both her legs five days before the season premiere, that is when Melissa stepped up and took her place. You could tell right off the bat that she has been trained in ballet dancing so it wasn’t too hard for her to get up to speed quickly. Ballet really paid off for Melissa. Twice she scored thirty out of thirty from the three judges. Perfect scores do not protect you from being voted off, however. (Take a look at Sabrina Bryan, she was sent packing with her dancing partner Mark Ballas in the 5th season despite scoring the highest first week score and later getting the first 30 out of 30 score.) Ty Murry is the dancer who has so improved, and is also so love-able. Having a rodeo star background gave him a wide, diverse fan base during voting, but did little in the way of preparing him for dancing. Shawn Johnson, gold medal winning gymnast, showed us that she can perform on the hard dance floor just as well as she can on a soft mat. Finally, Gilles Marini simply couldn’t do a routine that didn’t blow me away. He is definitely my favorite.
Who will win? Another couple goes home this week. After that the three last dance teams have a final dance-off. I can’t wait until the final show airs! Luckily I have a DVR for a backup just in case something comes up.
On a side note, one of the best ways to watch Dancing with the Stars is in high definition.
